Google and Yahoo Face Off Over Local Ads

|

Yahoo this week described itself to Forbes.com as “laser focused” on bringing local brand advertisers online. Meanwhile, Google’s director of mobile advertising, Diana Pouliot, told an audience at a CTIA-related event that a third of mobile Google searches are now related to the location of the searcher.

It’s no secret that local and mobile advertising are growth areas — Borrell recently projected that location-based mobile spending would grow to $4 billion in 2015 from $34 million in 2009 — but now both giants and startups are rushing to get their ducks in a row. Yahoo says it wants to bring on national chains like fast food restaurants that advertise regionally, but often spend just 1-2 percent of their budgets online. “Local display is about to take off,” Lem Lloyd, Yahoo’s VP of channel sales for North America, told Forbes.

Why MyTown Is Bigger Than Foursquare & Gowalla ( MyTown Iphone app not available in Canada )

|

Location-based social networking services like Foursquare and Gowalla may eat up a lot of techie mindshare, but they still have very few users — roughly 150,000 and 50,000, respectively. However, by virtue of product design and social norms, users are discouraged from cheating when it comes to the services’ social gaming elements, so the value of their information is high.

On the other hand, an iPhone app called MyTown, which also features a location-based check-in system game, acquired 250,000 users within just two weeks of launching earlier this month.

Geo Location / Social Location: There Can Only Be One (Gowalla, Foursquare, Brightkite, Loopt, NowMe....)

|

Talk of "location wars" or "geowars" began filtering through the blogosphere even before the event kicked off, since the space has gotten superheated and Foursquare has become the new Twitter. Now, even Twitter and Facebook are trying to become Foursquare by launching their own location-based features.

TechCruch's MG Siegler (who was actually at SXSW) has already complained of "check-in fatigue" in trying to track a slew of different social location services at the confab, including Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, Whrrl, Brightkite, Burbn, MyTown, CauseWorld, Hot Potato and Plancast.

"Even with great AT&T service, this would take a solid 10 minutes or more to check-in to all of them.

which social location, geo location game / app is going to come out on top? Gowalla? Foursquare? NowMe?

MyTown Hits 1.5 Million Location-Based Gamers; Ups The Social With Version 3.0

|
While Foursquare and Gowalla garner much of the buzz around location right now, Booyah’s MyTown continues to garner many of the actual users. In fact, the service has crossed 1.5 million users. And it’s gaining them at an incredible rate of 130,000 new users a week. Compare this to Foursquare, which during SXSW crossed 600,000 total users. And MyTown is showing no signs of slowing down, with another new version of the app now available.

13 Essential Social Media Lessons for B2B Marketers from the Masters

|

Social media marketing might feel simple for the B2C crowd, but with B2B, it’s an entirely different beast. Businesses are entities that are not entirely social — and certainly don’t do the immediate impulse buy like the typical consumer. Nevertheless, B2B marketing is absolutely possible on social media, but certain rules should be followed before proceeding along that route.

We asked several “masters” about their number one B2B social media tip and included them below.

“Social media isn’t about you, it’s about them.”
