Bing Dives Into Entertainment With New Search Vertical - Music, Movies, TV and Games

|
Microsoft’s search engine just got a whole lot more media-focused with the launch of Bing Entertainment, a new vertical centering on music, movies, TV and games. The goal behind the new destination at bing.com/entertainment is to make it easier to find what movie to watch, what music to listen to, what casual games to play: “spend less time searching for entertainment and more time doing the stuff you love.”

Facebook Firehose Comes to Bing - Bing Social Media Marketing & Real Time Search Results

|

bing_logo_jun10.jpgYusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President of Microsoft's Bing search engine announced today the launch of a new social portal that will produce real-time results from both Facebook and Twitter. The site, which will be live later today, will be found at bing.com/social and will be "the first search experience integrating the full Facebook firehose," according to Microsoft.

Bing has featured a Twitter portal for social search, and by adding Facebook results the search engine is stepping up its real-time search game to include results from both services. The Facebook results include both information from public pages, as well as popular shared links from users with appropriate privacy settings for public sharing. Bing also helps you quickly scan the social links by including an excerpt from the link in context within the results.

Bing Adds Facebook, Twitter Sharing To Shopping

|
There are a number of “social shopping” sites and, of course, numerous product or shopping-related blogs. Among the most visible in the first category are Kaboodle, ThisNext/Stylehive and Polyvore. They offer tools and features that allow people to share, compare and vote on products. The mainstream shopping comparison engines such as Shopping.com or PriceGrabber don’t fully enter into this realm, although Shopping.com is giving away an iPad if you become a “fan” on Facebook:

Google Attempts to Explain Its Spy Cars. Again. - Online Privacy & Online Identity Protection

TeleAtlas and Bing (as well as something called the Fraunhofer Institute, Skyhook* and NavTeq) harvest similar information. For those concerned with excessive gathering of invasive personal information, or aggregated information that can, with massaging, become invasive, I'm not sure the fact that others are doing it will be terribly comforting.

Seeking Mobile Magic as Search Engine Use Shrinks

|

Microsoft's attempt to grab a hold of the search market is paying off, as Bing has gone up for the tenth month in succession, by 0.2%. The other two, Yahoo and Ask, were up 0.1% each, but with Google's share at 65.1%, there is little hope of its rivals besting that.

So, back to the leveling out of search engine use. Annual growth rates, according to comScore qSearch, aredown, from 33.1% in March 2009, to 7.6% this year.

Bing Gets Smarter on Cars, Sports; Ties in with Foursquare - Reviews by PC Magazine

|
Today, Microsoft's "decision engine," Bing, will be updated with more detailed information on car models, sports comparisons, and a slight redesign. What does this mean? Specific data and answers to questions, Microsoft says.

Some of the changes will roll out slowly, at first appearing to only 5 percent of users, but the car "DTP"—or domain task page will be served to all users. It's all part of Bing's strategy of not simply delivering text link results for search, but deep information on the searched-for term.

For example, searching on Hyndai Elantra will result in a page showing the sticker and invoice prices, fuel economy, trims, and competitors. Tab options above the results will offer images, video, and all web results as options in addition to the page showing these specs. Other types of results, such as performers will have as their top result a "card" showing an image, the official site, and appearance dates.

"We have a vision for Bing to serve as a vital assistant to your online decision-making,"
