In 2001 the adage was, “if you build it, they will come.” In 2010 it is, “if you build it, they might not care.” Valuable, unique, even remarkable items will not magically garner links on their own merit. They need a shepherd, an advocate, a promoter, a platform, or a bankroll to push them into the spotlight. Sometimes they need to age, to spread slowly and naturally. Sometimes they need to be pushed heavily and quickly. Different types of content will require different tactics.

The world wide web is dead. Long live the world wide web.

In his closing keynote at Marketing's Search Engine Tune Up conference in Toronto Wednesday, Mike Grehan, vice-president and global content director with New York-based Incisive Media, spoke about how the world wide web wasn't built to handle the types of technology used on it today, much less for the needs of the future.

As it applies to search, that means even Google can't track every web page and, increasingly, people will be using other platforms such as mobile applications for the advantage of real-time search. "When it comes to real-time search, the world wide web is bust," said Grehan, whose company includes Search Engine Watch, ClickZ, and Search Engine Strategies.

Last year, those Evian roller babies skated their way into the pages of the Guinness World Records as the most-viewed online advertisement in history, with what the company now claims is more than 100 million views.

But one achievement it did not pull off? A boost in U.S. sales. Evian lost market share as sales dropped 28 percent in each of the first two quarters, although it reduced those declines to 26 percent in the third quarter and 19 percent in the fourth, according to Beverage Digest.
