Baidu Challenged bo Goso For China Search Dominance -- China Internet -- Chinese Search Engine Marketing

|
Google's censorship battle and partial retreat from China have reduced competition for Baidu, the country's leading search engine, but it still faces some challengers on its path to market supremacy.

One of them could end up being Goso.cn. The new search engine is a joint effort by the People's Daily and people.com.cn and is part of the latter's stated efforts to become a multilingual and multimedia global brand.

Is Facebook's Social Search Engine a Google Killer? (Facebook Marketing)

|
When Facebook launched its Open Graph protocol in April, blanketing the Web with "like" and "recommend" buttons, it seemed obvious that one of the company's goals was to use the resulting behavioral data to power a social search engine—one based on likes instead of links. That process is now well under way, as a report at AllFacebook notes. The company has confirmed that all Web pages that use the network's open graph plug-ins show up in the social network's search results in the same way traditional Facebook pages do, as described by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg in his keynote at the F8 conference.

Sites like YellowPages.com, Yelp.com and others that are showing up in Facebook's search results may become part of the new social media optimization default toolset. Is your business listed in the key social media networks to help you rank in Facebook's search results (fbserps)?

Geomarketing: Ten Foursquare marketing campaigns

|

Geolocation-based social network Foursquare just might be the internet's 'next big thing'. While it isn't anywhere close to the size of Twitter or Facebook, the young company last month passed the million user mark.

That's a memorable milestone for any consumer internet startup, but the company's progress is perhaps better measured by the number of marketing deals it has inked with bigger companies. Here are 10 of those deals.

The Truth About Twitter’s Promoted Tweets

|
Having said that, the problem all along has been how to take all of this growth and turn Twitter into a service that generates revenue. It has always been free to use, but like any company, Twitter’s objective is to make money. Enter “Promoted Tweets”, Twitter’s new advertising program. It’s very similar to Google Adwords. Advertisers bid on keywords and when a search is done on Twitter, triggering one of those keywords, an ad will be shown at the top of the results page – at least in phase one of the rollout. Only one promoted Tweet will be shown on the search results page.

Bing Dives Into Entertainment With New Search Vertical - Music, Movies, TV and Games

|
Microsoft’s search engine just got a whole lot more media-focused with the launch of Bing Entertainment, a new vertical centering on music, movies, TV and games. The goal behind the new destination at bing.com/entertainment is to make it easier to find what movie to watch, what music to listen to, what casual games to play: “spend less time searching for entertainment and more time doing the stuff you love.”

Foursquare’s Yelp problem

|

Well, Yelp (CrunchBase info on Yelp) has now copied the checkin gesture that Foursquare (Crunchbase info on Foursquare) introduced to us all and also they added badges of their own. I already am the baron of my favorite Mexican restaurant in Half Moon Bay.

This copying behavior demonstrates to me that Yelp is definitely jealous of the attention Foursquare is getting and isn’t able to innovate on its own.

This seems to be a problem for Foursquare. But is it really?

Yes.

Here’s why.

Financial institutions banking on social media to engage consumers

|

As the need for financial knowledge and empowerment grows, so has the trend for financial institutions and companies to engage with consumers through social media.

Atlanta-based credit reporting agency Equifax has launched a personal finance blog that will feature weekly insights and practical information from consumer finance experts, the company announced this week. In February, SunTrust, also based in Atlanta, debuted its LiveSolid.com Web site. The site has attracted more than 210,000 unique visitors since its launch. And personal finance expert Patricia Stallworth of Johns Creek, president of PS Worth, runs the popular site, MindingYourMoney.com.

Can you think of any social media applications or uses of Twitter or Facebook or other social media your bank could offer you that you'd actually find helpful? Do you really want to follow your bank on twitter just because they hold your mortgage? Perhaps you'd follow them if they offered you a discount on your monthly fees? Is there a social media app out there that can make my bank branch be open during ALL regular business hours 6 days a week? ;)

Inside Gatorade’s Social Media Command Center - Social Media Marketing

|

In the realm of marketing, Gatorade is probably best known for splashy commercials featuring some of the world’s most famous athletes. However, a new effort behind the scenes of the PepsiCo-owned sports drink maker is putting social media quite literally at the center of the way Gatorade approaches marketing.

The company recently created the Gatorade Mission Control Center inside of its Chicago headquarters, a room that sits in the middle of the marketing department and could best be thought of as a war room for monitoring the brand in real-time across social media.

Marketers advised to use social media but get back to basics - Social Media Marketing Consultant

|

Consumers don't want to have a friendship with their toothpaste.

That was the message this week for marketers from Jonathan Salem Baskin of Advertising Age, who said the social media push by companies is getting away from the basics of advertising: making money for the client.

``As an industry, we've allowed this nonsense to get out of hand,'' Baskin, a marketing consultant and columnist for Advertising Age, told about 70 attendees at the global Worldwide Partners advertising conference in Miami Beach. ``Ultimately, we're about selling stuff, and I think that's what we have to get back to.''

Now Live, Twitter's New Ads: Are You Brave Enough for This?

|

Short-form social network Twitter has taken a bold new step in exploring its potential business model. The company appears to have begun promoting keywords in its "trending topics" list for sponsors.

When users click on a promoted trending topic, they are brought to a search results page, where the page is topped by a promoted Tweet. They aren't sent to an ad landing page, but to a live and uncensored conversation. That's what we're seeing with the new movie Toy Story 3 today at least. It's a logical and interesting way for the company to make money. It's also unlike almost any other advertising in history.

Interesting point that the level of Twitter chatter about a movie *could* do a better job predicting the success of a films box office performance than present methods of predicting financial success. You agree? Would you buy an ad that would encourage open ended conversation about your company on Twitter?
