How to Aggregate Twitter & Facebook Posts, Hashtags and Users: Paper.li Social Media Publishing Experiments

|
Vancouver Internet Marketing News
a paper by Brent Purves – 9 contributors today

Am experimenting with http://www.paper.li Twitter and Facebook news aggregator gizmo that automates the creation of an online "newspaper" based on criteria you set. Essentially you tell it to search for keywords, geography, even certain user accounts and then it auto generates a microsite just for you. Kind of interesting but I wish there was more flexibility to tailor results and add custom content and have more flexibility in design and publishing dates. Visit the Twitter feed test at http://paper.li/brentpurves/1292435236 Perhaps the robot will feature you in this paper and you'll feel famous for a day. I hope so. Tweet about Vancouver Internet Marketing and you may just show up :)

Try making your own and drop me a note on Twitter at @brentpurves to let me know your thoughts, what you like, don't like, if you find it valuable or not.

IKEA introduces social media to its marketing catalogue - Next campaign: "Swede Yourself" in-store ? :)

|

IKEA Canada has launched an advertising campaign and contest that encourage consumers to share their favourite images from the home furnishing retailer's latest catalogue.

The campaign includes television, print, online and out-of-home creative touting the arrival of IKEA's 2011 catalogue. Each execution also alerts readers to IKEA's "Capture the Page" contest, an online initiative that invites consumers to upload pictures of their favourite images from the catalogue to a microsite,

So when you're reading through the Ikea catalogue and it asks you to take a picture of a page and then email it to win 10k will you take the time to do it? Maybe they should encourage the same thing in their Ikea stores -- take a picture of yourself with the thing you see that you like in the store and email it to enter to win that item. Instead of "Capture the Page" maybe Ikea can get permission to use "Swede Yourself" from Be Kind Rewind fame. Do you think a whole Sweded version of the Ikea website would draw any viral or grassroots attention? I'd visit it and watch submitted videos of people swede'ing non-ikea-purchased furniture or things in their life (whatever that might mean).

Olay, Gap, Pepsi Run Geo-Social Campaigns - but Not on Foursquare

|

Foursquare is hands-down the leader of the location-based/geo-social marketing space when it comes to hype. But other services are making their marks among both brands and users.

In fact, three of the five location-based services briefed below have more users than Foursquare, which has roughly 1 million. Like Foursquare, most utilize the mobile "check in" system, while rewarding users for registering an arrival at a store, restaurant, or another kind of business. Though, the services are being leveraged in different ways by brand partners.

Here are snapshots of recent campaigns by name brands on five prominent location-based platforms not named Foursquare:

Now Live, Twitter's New Ads: Are You Brave Enough for This?

|

Short-form social network Twitter has taken a bold new step in exploring its potential business model. The company appears to have begun promoting keywords in its "trending topics" list for sponsors.

When users click on a promoted trending topic, they are brought to a search results page, where the page is topped by a promoted Tweet. They aren't sent to an ad landing page, but to a live and uncensored conversation. That's what we're seeing with the new movie Toy Story 3 today at least. It's a logical and interesting way for the company to make money. It's also unlike almost any other advertising in history.

Interesting point that the level of Twitter chatter about a movie *could* do a better job predicting the success of a films box office performance than present methods of predicting financial success. You agree? Would you buy an ad that would encourage open ended conversation about your company on Twitter?

Twitter to Change Links and How They Are Displayed

|

In an effort to remove the obscurity of shortened links and to prevent malware and phishing attacks, Twitter has begun the rollout t.co, its official URL shortener, along with some major changes to how the microblogging platform handles links.

In a blog post aptly titled Links and Twitters: Length Shouldn’t Matter, Twitter’s Sean Garrett announced that the company is taking a new approach to URLs. Not only will all links on Twitter.com and Twitter apps be “wrapped” in t.co links, but how they are counted against the 140 character limit. These change will occur throughout the summer.

Ow.ly and Ht.ly ~ Choose Bar or Non-bar URL Shortener for HootSuite - Twitter Social Media Marketing Tools

|

HootSuite users can now choose between two flavors of links — one with a social bar and one without.

In this character-limited web, URL shorteners are of great importance — for statistics, for branding, or simply for convenience. Ow.ly is used to shrink hundreds of thousands of links daily by users seeking clickthrough statistics and the one-click convenience of shrinking a link in HootSuite.

Hootsuite is also offering a pro service enabling you to use your own vanity url for your shortened url -- ie goo.gl

Twitter Buys a Text Messaging Company - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com

|

Today, though, most people in the United States think about Twitter as a Web tool, and they access it either online or using smartphone apps.

But Twitter has not forgotten about all the people in the world who do not have fancy phones. On Friday, the company announced that it has acquired Cloudhopper, a Seattle text-messaging start-up.

Twitter's Advertising Scheme is Delightfully Boring - Just As It Should Be. Twitter Keyword Marketing

|

Twitter announced tonight it's got a plan for advertisements. You can breathe a sigh of relief; the plan is downright boring, just as it should be.

Advertisements will begin in search, with keywords being bid on and a single advertisement appearing with frequency dependent on its performance. Then the ads will be extended to 3rd party applications like TweetDeck and others. It's unclear who will use it, Tweetie got bought by Twitter last week and Twitterific has its own ads, but other apps will come and go, hopefully given the option (not the requirement) to show Twitter ads to their users.

Finally, ads will begin to appear on Twitter.com

TweetUp : Twitter Marketplace - showcasing the world's best tweeters -- but only from USA?

|
TweetUp, Inc., announced today a new Twitter marketplace designed to showcase the world's best tweeters and enable them to grow a highly targeted following. TweetUp is a new patent-pending platform that combines the popularity, relevance and influence of tweets and tweeters with a bid-based marketplace. Major partners, including leading Twitter search clients and top web sites, will display the results, enabling users to easily find the best tweets and tweeters in the world.

Tried signing up but it's only accepting Twitter users from USA...not Canada.

Retailers jump on social media bandwagon with Facebook, Twitter - Social Media Marketing

|

To spread the word about a new skin-care salon in West Seattle, owner Karen Jahn got her social-media act together and hired a publicist to reach out to several hundred customers on Facebook and Twitter.

Through teaser messages, fans of Jahn's Wax Bar in Ballard were told about the cross-town opening and given a chance to win weekly prizes.

"I don't know if we got many new clients out of it," said Jahn, who spent more than $800 on the monthlong promotion. "But we got more people to follow us, and now more people are aware of the Wax Bar."

How To Boost Search Engine Rankings Using Twitter

|

As Twitter results become increasingly commonplace on search engine result pages, there’s no time like the present for in-house marketers to help spice up unpaid search efforts with some Twitter action. As brand names are quickly claimed, the marketer who hesitates may be lost.

There are lots of wonderful branding and customer communication benefits to Twitter that make it a worthwhile addition to any marketer’s efforts, but here the focus is on the greatest benefit Twitter can bring to unpaid search efforts — to capture more real estate on the search engine results page. Increasingly, Twitter results are popping up in several forms on Google and Yahoo, making it essential for marketers to start tweeting to claim this valuable top of the page space.
