|

Is Amazon.com trying to be the new Facebook? You might think so after reading the e-commerce giant's new patent for a "social networking system."

The U.S. patent, granted June 15, "provides a mechanism for a user to selectively establish contact relationships or connections with other users" and "automatically notify users of personal information updates made by their respective contacts."

Combine Social Media and E-Mail Marketing - Grow Your Audience

|

Social media and e-mail marketing work differently.
Social media gives public conversations a forum. Anyone with an opinion, content or a link to share can join the conversation. It's fast, fluid, timely and interactive. It's also fleeting. That's where social media and e-mail communications differ. Your posts on social media websites flow downstream with all the other messages. If you tweet in the morning and your customer logs on in the afternoon, that follower may miss out on what you had to say.

On the other hand, e-mail offers a more intimate level of contact with your customers. When someone opens your e-mail newsletter, you have a quiet moment of her time.

These are five great, basic tips to be where your customers are, use your email lists to build your social media presence, repurpose your content, and use social media to invite people to your website or blog or to sign up for your email newsletter.

Cross pollinate and milk your content for all it's worth in all of your channels. If you write something ask yourself where else you can use that same content in the same or slightly revised format or context or medium.

AOL's Bebo on Its Last Legs?

|
AOL is evaluating strategic alternatives for Bebo, including a sale or shutdown of the social networking site this year. A decision is expected by the end of next month.

In early 2008, AOL, then part of Time Warner, acquired U.K.-headquartered Bebo for $850 million at a time when media giants were looking at digital media targets, particularly in the networking space. But the price target was considered very high, and TW and AOL executives later started hinting at a potential sale.

Gowalla + Foursquare + Brightkite + Yelp + Google Maps=Checkin Mania

|
Location-based social networking just got itself a tidy little mash-up. Checkin Mania uses Gowalla, Foursquare, Brightkite, and Yelp and displays all the places that the networks' users have been checkin' out. There are diddy little icons to mark the maps, and you can click on the users' names as well as the places to find out what they think.

Action Streams: A New Idea for Social Networks

|

A loose body of innovators from some of the biggest social networking companies online have begun discussing an addition to the Activity Streams standard format called an Action Stream.

That could blow the world of social networking wide open, allowing users to try out other competing social networks without losing their ability to interact with friends on Facebook, for example.

Why MyTown Is Bigger Than Foursquare & Gowalla ( MyTown Iphone app not available in Canada )

|

Location-based social networking services like Foursquare and Gowalla may eat up a lot of techie mindshare, but they still have very few users — roughly 150,000 and 50,000, respectively. However, by virtue of product design and social norms, users are discouraged from cheating when it comes to the services’ social gaming elements, so the value of their information is high.

On the other hand, an iPhone app called MyTown, which also features a location-based check-in system game, acquired 250,000 users within just two weeks of launching earlier this month.
